26 Years Later, 8-Bit Earthbound Finally Comes West

In a surprise announcement in the minutes leading up to the 2015 Nintendo World Championships, Nintendo of America shared a pre-recorded video message from Earthbound/Mother series creator Shigesato Itoi via its Twitch channel, revealing that the original Famicom installment of the Mother series would be releasing on the North American Wii U Virtual console today, 6/14.

The 8-bit RPG was first released in Japan in 1989 and was localized for the English-speaking market for a prospective 1991 NES release, but was ultimately shelved as Nintendo of America felt it inappropriate to release an 8-bit blockbuster with the SNES already on the market. A quarter of a century later, the game is finally coming to the west as Earthbound Beginnings, and it should be available shortly after this post goes live.

Check out the trailer below, and hang on to your butts, boys and girls… this might finally be the year we get that Mother 3 announcement for English-speaking audiences. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttKkiEKqwuk
