Today, SEGA announced that a new entry in the Sonic Boom series would release this holiday season for the Nintendo 3DS. Like the previous 3DS Sonic Boom game, Fire & Ice will be developed by Sanzaru Games, who had previously worked on the latest entry in the Sly Cooper series. So far, there’s been no mention of any Sonic games headed to consoles.
Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is a new single-player adventure in the Sonic Boom universe. You’ll play as Sonic and his friends throughout a variety of levels battling Dr. Eggman and a new villain named “D-Fekt.” Like the name suggests, this game will focus on a variety of gameplay and environmental features that take advantage of the elements of fire and ice. There’s also a new multiplayer mode called Bot Racing that’s all about competing with your friends at top speed.
This announcement is actually surprising to hear considering how poorly received the last Sonic Boom games were, both critically and commercially. It seems as though SEGA isn’t ready to give up on the blue hedgehog just yet.
