If you haven’t heard or if you’ve been in a weird, bear-like hibernation, Shovel Knight released last week for Wii U, 3DS and PC to almost universal praise. There are many reasons why I think Shovel Knight specifically is tickling everyone’s 8-bit funny bon,e but one big factor is easily the killer chip tune soundtrack composed by Jake Kaufman. Jake has been composing music for video games over the past 15 years and worked on the soundtrack for the Shantae series. Joining Jake on Shovel Knight is Manami Matsumae, who created the music for the original Mega Man.
I could not have asked for a better end result from the music in Shovel Knight and, as of right now, it is being offered in the “Name Your Own Price” format through Bandcamp. So yes, you can get this soundtrack for the low, low price of $0! Don’t let this terrific opportunity to get an amazing soundtrack pass you by. If you can give Jake a couple bucks as well so he can continue making his musical masterpieces for all of our ears to enjoy, so much the better.
And for those of you who are so inclined, you can download a version of the soundtrack to be played on a real NES/Famicom machine as well as numerous NSF players. Now thats some real retro chip tune magic!
