The odds of Nintendo localizing Earthbound sequel Mother 3 for the West grow longer and longer every year, but thanks to the work of a talented and dedicated group of fans led by translator Clyde Mandalin (a.k.a. “Mato”), Mother 3 has actually been playable in English for more than half a decade. And darnit, we’re not getting any younger. While we were recording our Christmas podcast late last year, a few of us at Invisible Gamer made a resolution for 2015: to play through the game together — sort of like a book club for video games — and get together a few times throughout the adventure to record our thoughts, talk about the events we’ve experienced, and share some of Mother 3’s amazing music. And by golly, we actually did it!

In this first installment of a new podcast we’re calling Classic Game Club, we cover the first three chapters of Mother 3. If you haven’t played the game yet, I highly recommend you STOP what you’re doing and get on that before listening. We’re heading straight into spoiler territory here, and there’s a real doozy right at the beginning. If you have played the game and would like to know some more about it, we also highly recommend you check out this 2000 interview with series creator Shigesato Itoi and producers Satoru Iwata and Shigeru Miyamoto, where they discuss the development and ultimate cancellation of the Nintendo 64 version of the game (also known as Earthbound 64.)

We’ll update this post later today with a full list of all the songs we featured in the show, but for now, give it a listen, and let us know what you think — we’ll be covering the next two chapters of the game sometime in the next couple of weeks!

We haven’t started putting our podcasts on iTunes yet, but you can listen to the show via the embedded player below, download it and load it to your media player of choice by right-clicking here and choosing “save link as…”, or simply subscribe to our RSS feed right here!

So far, Mother 3 feels like an improvement to Earthbound in every way. It’s great we all get to communicate as we progress through this game and can discuss some of its nuances. Definitely looking forward to recording the next two parts!
